Things Which Can Halt Acne

Making sure we are in perfect health can be a move in a positive direction in the battle against acne. The main key to successThe main way to success is to maintain a good diet. A persons diet should always include lots of fresh vegetables and fruit and also lots of water.

The vitamins in the fresh fruit and vegetables, together with the antioxidants, help considerably reduce the amount of toxins in our bodies (toxins are known to play a part in the development of acne. Also these vitamins ensure that other bodily functions are carried out successfully which is immensely important in the healing processes. They also equip the body with the means to keep the levels of bacteria to an absolute minimum.

Scientists generally agree that increased production of sebum can also contribute in the development of acne. Increased hormone levels can increase sebum production and also bring on an acne breakout. Luckily vitamins are known to normalize hormone production levels and reduce the risks of an acne breakout. The main vitamin controlling hormone production is vitamin A. Vitamin A is an antioxidant and it also helps in the strengthening of skin tissue.

Other vitamins useful in the struggle against acne include vitamin C, B and E. Vitamin E is commonly found in skin care creams.

How Effective Is Topical Niacinamide Cream On Acne

Posted by on December 14, 2008

Several of todays poular acne cream treatments contain either retinoids or antimicrobials. Antimicrobials, as their name suggests, kill or inhibit the production of the bacteria that cause acne. Retinoids, which are made from vitamin A, stop the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and unclog the pores. Following are examples of these.

Topical Antimicrobials

· Clindamycin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic. It reduces acne and lessens inflammation. Clinical tests have proven Clindamycin to be well tolerated and safe. However, it may cause side effects such as skin dryness or irritation. It can decrease the bacterial resistance that often occurs when antibiotics are used.

· Erythromycin’s properties are both anti inflammatory and antimicrobial. Acne cream preparations that combine erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide have been proven to be very effective. Possible side effects are irritation and dryness of the area treated. It also decreases bacterial resistance caused by using antibiotics.

Topical Retinoids

· Adapalene is a synthetic retinoid that unclogs pores and has moderate to potent anti-inflammatory properties. Minor skin irritation and dryness may occur with use.

· Tretinoin was the first retinoid developed for topical use. It is a natural retinoid that gradually unclogs pores and helps them stay unplugged. Burning, itching and redness are a few of the side effects that some users observe.

Topical Niacinamide (also called Nicotinamide)

After Vitamin-A derived retinoids, the most recent revolutionary treatment for acne comes from a substance called niacinamide. It is made from the B vitamin niacin.

Niacinamide and acne treatment were the subject of a New York State University study, where 76 patients were studied for the acne healing effects of 4% niacinamide gel versus 1% clindamycin gel. The gels were applied two times a day for 8 weeks, on moderate to inflammatory acne.

The result – 82% of niacinamide patients showed improvement as compared to only 68% of clindamycin patients. Niacinamide is the preferred choice because it doesn’t diminish bacterial resistance, as Clindamycin is widely known for.

Acnessential, a 4% Niacinamide cream, is one of the most effective acne cream products in the market today. Some advantages are…

· It is natural and safe to use for as long as you need it.
· It will not make your skin develop bacterial resistance unlike most antimicrobials.
· It is ideal if you have dry, sensitive skin and cannot tolerate retinoids well.

Furthermore, 4% Niacinamide cream (such as Acnessential) can be used alone or alongside antibiotics and even retinoids.
