If you’ve ever felt self conscious about being out and about with red inflammations and pock marks all over your face, I’m pretty sure you’re eager to know what severe acne treatment options are available.  In this post, we’ll discuss what the options are, what works and what may be best for your specific condition.

Your Skin and Severe Acne Treatments?

With severe acne in particular, It may be advisable to visit your local dermatologist first to discuss the treatment options available to you.  the best course of therapy is normally determined after a full examination of the condition.  Your dermatologist will be the best person to make a diagnosis and determination.

    Avoid OTC Topical Treatments

A mild to moderate outbreak of acne will benefit from many topical over-the-counter solutions, if applied with a frequency of about once per month.  Severe acne outbreaks, however are prone to being far more sensitive.  Except for a limited number of these treatments, by using these options, you run the risk of making the condition worse.

If your acne outbreak is focused on your face, try to limit the amount of direct contact that you have with your face.  Do not wash with abrasive facial scrubs and absolutely do not try to pop anything on your face.  Rupture of the inflammation is likely, if you continue to pick at your face.  This could easily lead to a spread of the infection.

    Severe Acne Treatment

    Common Dermatological recommendations include:

    Retinoids such as:

    • Retin A
    • Tretinoin
    • Differin
    • Avage
    • Tazarotene
    • Renova

Your health provider may even combine popular severe acne treatments. These may include:

    • Ziana – A topical combination of clindamycin and tretinoin.
    • BenzaClin – Cllindamycin used in conjuction with Benzoyl Peroxide.
    • Benzamycin – This is topical erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide.

Also used for severe acne treatment is Spironolactone.  This medicine effectively lowers the level of male hormone in your system, male hormone is a major contributor to acne.  Sorry gentlemen, this medication is only available to women.  Hormone therapy, namely the use of birth control pills or oral contraceptives, is also very effective in the treatment of severe acne.

Some of the more potent drugs used in the treatment of severe acne include antibiotics in combination with Retin A.  Once the acne outbreaks clears up, the use of the antibiotics is discontinued.  One negative of this treatment option is the body will in time, become immune to the antibiotic. The problem is antibiotics may no longer be effective in treating not only severe acne, but other types of infections.

Arguably the most effective severe acne treatment is Accutane.  Most people only consider Accutane after all other treatments have been tried.  The problems people have experienced with Accutane are well documented.  If you consider this option, be sure to really grill your doctor about both the pros and the cons.

If you come away with one thing from this article, it should be that there are many choices for treating severe acne.  In time, you should be able to find the treatment option that works best for you.
