Treating eczema the right way

Posted by on June 26, 2009

More at: Skin Moisturizing. Before treating eczema, diagnosis and environment investigation are necessary in the first stages. Only a doctor can prescribe medication for a dermatological condition and monitor the evolution of the disease over a certain period of time. Eczema is usually manifest as irritated swollen skin. The most common type of eczema is the one which is based on allergy to various triggers and it may be encountered in those patients who may also suffer from asthma or hay fever. This type of condition is encountered in a pretty large number of children and infants nowadays and also in adults. In some cases, the symptoms may become manifest now and then throughout the entire lifetime; this is usually explained by the inefficiency of the treatments administered without a doctor’s recommendation.

From among the many types of symptoms, the itch is the most often encountered. Treating eczema efficiently equals the elimination of the itchy discomfort and the prevention of recurrent episodes later on. The same goes for the aspect of the skin which is most of the times dry and scaly.

Prevention is definitely preferred to treating eczema, there’s no doubt about it. Although experts are not certain of the causes behind the problem, it is suspected that the overactive immune system starts it by the reaction to a certain element from the environment.

Various chemical agents or substances could be held responsible for this condition as well. So, this means that knowing what causes you allergies means preventing eczema, therefore, avoid chemicals at all costs and particularly their direct contact with the skin.

As far as medication for treating eczema is concerned, specialists have not managed to come up with a cure that is applicable to all the patients and to all forms of this condition. The treatment may work on some patients and may have no effects on others.

There is one recently discovered class of drugs known as calcineurin inhibitors that are used for treating eczema even in its most advanced stages.

Such medication may not be safe to use for kids under a certain age, therefore, make sure to discuss the treatment options with your pediatrician. Children are known to be more sensitive to medication so it is not a good idea to trust commercials and ads and start an over-the-counter medication individually. Even for adults, it is widely recommended that you see a specialist before resorting to any kind of medical treatment.

Hand eczema

Get more from: Hand Moisturizing.
Eczema is a skin disease that affects people of all ages, but for both genders the common cause is usually genetic. Where does eczema appear? Well, unfortunately, any part of the skin is exposed to the problem.

You can recognize eczema by the following symptoms: dryness of skin, repeated rashes, redness of the skin, skin swelling/edema, itching, crusting, blistering, flaking, oozing, cracking and even bleeding. Healing lesions could also be associated with a slight discoloration of the skin. However, scarring, in eczema is quite a rare consequence.

From all the possible manifestations, hand eczema is pretty frequent. Studies indicate that 4% of men and 10% of women are affected by the condition. Apparently, hand eczema is reported in relation to some special kind of physical work being usually encountered with people with small children and with mechanics, hairdressers, surgeons, dental workers, homemakers and others. What do all these people have in common? The answer is that they work in wet environments; therefore, humidity is a favoring factor for this skin condition.

Approximately 75% of people who experience eczema have the type called contact dermatitis. This can be irritant or allergic although the difference is hard to tell sometimes. Hand eczema differs in severity from individual to individual but it usually begins with mild dryness and a little redness.

Initially it manifests between fingers and on them with the possibility for the skin to become scaly and itchy. As it happens with the other types of eczema, in time, hand eczema may also lead to the appearance of cracking, swelling and blisters on the skin of the hand. If it is not treated properly and in due time, it will probably spread to arms and feet.

The most basic trigger of hand eczema is thefrequent washing and drying of the hands. There are three situations that show a possibility to develop hand eczema: if you had atopic eczema in your childhood, if you suffer from asthma or hay fever, and if you have psoriasis. Hand eczema can be eliminated if you pay attention to the following elements. Besides the practical advice that any health care provider will give you in such situations there are also some pharmaceutical products from which your doctor will surely select the best. It is good for you to try to avoid washing dishes by hand, but if this is not possible, in case you wear gloves, make sure to put a cotton pair under the rubber one so as to avoid the hand irritation because of detergents or synthetic glove material.

Eczema on babies

Posted by on June 26, 2009

Brought to you by: Body Moisturizing. Eczema on babies is quite the opposite of what we all know and dream to have: smooth, milky fresh and soft skin.

Twenty percent of infants nowadays end up affected by atopic eczema which is a rash that they get on their skin in various parts of their body as a consequence of the immune system response to an allergic trigger. The problem is easy to recognize by the flaky aspect, the scales and the rash red, dry look.

Not too severe forms of eczema on babies have simple treatment forms: constant moisturizing of the affected skin areas and the use of high quality cleansers.

Why is it that this condition appears so much in infant cases? Well, one explanation is that eczema on babies is tough to combat by a developing organism and skin. Moreover, the epidermal barrier is not completely developed as it is the case with adults for instance, not to mention that scratching deteriorates the condition even further. The adult skin has a top layer that serves in keeping moisture inside and irritant substances out and since infants’ skin has a superior sensitivity level, there are higher chances that eczema on babies is more often than in adults. In addition, as babies scratch a lot, aggravation of the eczema is another risk.

Other complementary reasons why eczema on babies proves so common, is that their skin may become irritated from substances we consider to be quite naturally used in our lives. Babies may develop a condition from clothing or sheets washed with fabric softeners, not to mention that negative reactions can be attributed to heat, sweat or to the skin contact with rough materials such as wool.

Whatever is in excess and comes in contact with their skin may cause an allergic rash or reaction.

Last but not least, eczema on babies is a lot more common when one of the parents has suffered from it. And, since parents have already had some experience with that, they should know what to do to improve their infants’ situation. It is important that mothers watch carefully for signs as to what might lead to this condition and try to eliminate this problem.

It is pretty unpleasant to wake up one morning and find that your baby suffers from this condition and see the poor little one unable to deal with it. As a parent the first thing you should do is contact your doctor and let him begin the so-called investigations to figure out how to make it better for the child. Furthermore, do not ignore the importance of conducting a bit of research concerning eczema on babies on your own, to find out about possible tips and hints.
